The Importance of Insight in Your Transformation

Everyone will experience a breakdown in life, at one time or another, and in one form or another.  In addition to getting through the breakdown, what is important about the event is what we gain or learn from the experience.  Learning how to deal with and eventually transform the experience of a breakdown will assist us in continuing to transform our life.  But this process of learning begins with having insight.  Having insight is crucial in our transformational process.

The initial phase of having this insight into our breakdown has to do with recognizing when we are in a breakdown.  If we are not aware of the fact that we are having a breakdown and continue to function as if in darkness, there will be no transformation, merely the same as it has always been in the past,  The key to such awareness is to be found in how the we are feeling about what is happening in our life at any one moment.  There have been many times in our lives where we do not stop to monitor or become present to how we are feeling.  It is from our feelings that we know that work has to be done with respect to the breakdown we are going through.

Sometimes we have a tendency to merely ignore or move away from how we are feeling about something or someone, about people, places or things.  Breakdowns have certain emotional states attached to their design or existence.  Those most common are emotions such as fear, anxiety, anger, frustration and sadness, negative emotions.  The first part of having insight is to monitor ones feeling state, to become present to how one is feeling and to do so to the point that it becomes part of ones very way of being in the world.

Learning how to stay aware of ones emotional state is crucial to being able to successfully transform the breakdown experience that is being created.  If aware we can act accordingly, take the necessary steps to transform the situation or event as it is occurring.

The Four Stages of the Process of Recovery.

It appears that there are four stages of the process of recovery that one should be aware of.  Sometimes awareness can be of great benefit to those who are taking their recovery seriously.  Knowing the four stages will assist an individual in being able to access where they are in the process and if needed taking appropriate action to avoid relapse.

Stage One:  Working the program of recovery.  When individuals come out of treatment they tend to feel good, believing that they have truly started a process of recovery and transformation.

Stage Two:  The Dip.  The Dip is when the individual begins to experience the negative emotional side of life, and all of the negative emotions associated with it.  The person will feel sad, depressed, anxious, frustration, etc.

Stage Three:  The Breakdown.  It is here that the individual starts to move toward relapse.  It is here that the individual is starting to lose the knowledge and wisdom once gained.  Relapse has not yet happened.

Stage Four:  Relapse.

The key to this type of paradigm is to know when one is going into The Dip and the steps to take to avoid slipping into Breakdown.  Once in a Breakdown it is difficult to pull oneself out of it and avoid relapse.  Usually the individual did not follow suggestions when they entered The Dip.  The Dip is part of life, part of being a human being.  We all experience it, and especially an individual in recovery.  The key is being able to manage The Dip appropriately, of reaching out to another human being for counsel.  If The Dip is not managed appropriately and effectively the individual will enter a Breakdown and most likely relapse.  The goal is to manage The Dip and return to stage one, practicing the program of recovery.

Another Component of Taking Care of Ourselves

Learning how to take care of ourselves also involves making appropriate distinctions about ourselves, others and life in general. One distinction that is crucial for our well being is realizing how and from where much of our stress is primarily generated. While some of the stressors that we face are apart of what it is to be a human being, much of the stress that we experience is of our own creation. A great deal of the stress that we experience has its origin in our own personal story and the meaning we make about life, in the thoughts that we think.

Once we understand that we are truly the cause in the matter, that we are responsible for the thoughts that we create or invent and that it is from these thoughts that much of our stress is generated, then and only then will we begin to be able to truly manage our stress and have the power to live the life that we want and love. Blaming others or situations for that which we experience will only limit our power, lead to frustration and eventually a great deal of stress.

Using Affirmations to Transform your life.

Louise Hay has written and spoken about the power of positive affirmations for years.  She believes that using positive affirmations consistently will change and transform your life.  While their transformative power is being confirmed and utilized more and more, using positive affirmations can also be difficult and even frustrating.  For some, after a period of using positive affirmation they sometimes experience resistance to their continued use.  What happens is that the positive affirmation are in conflict, sometimes direct conflict, to the thoughts and beliefs that the person has in their mind.  Many of these thoughts, ideas and beliefs have to do with what the person believes to be about themselves as a person, who they are in life.  In essence, ones identity gets calls into question, gets confronted and it is from the confrontation that ones experiences a sense of frustration and with it, creates a tendency to avoid and move after from and even stop the use of positive affirmation.  It is at this point that one has possibility of a breakthrough in their life, that is, if they are able to push through the resistance and stick with their use.  Sticking with the use of positive affirmations over an extended period of time can transform your life, can transform even who you believe yourself to be in the world.

Remember to always be aware of your expectations of others.

It is our expectations that will cause us to be emotionally upset.  It is our expectations that will cause us to be frustrated and even angry.  These expectations can apply to people, places and things.  With respect to people, to others, we need to especially be careful of the expectations that we create.  If I have an expectation that someone should be a certain way, act a certain way, then I have the possibility of being upset, of the expectation not being fulfilled and me emotionally affected.  The degree of the upset will be proportional to the attachment that I have with respect to the other person.  The key is not to never have expectations as to have them is part of being human.  We will create expectations of others, as we will of places and things.  Our transformative work is to recognize them when they are not being fulfilled and then to give them up, to let them go.  Giving them up and letting them go of the expectation allows one to not be attached to the expectation, thereby avoiding being emotionally upset.  Our body, how we feel, is the key to our recognition of being emotionally upset and frustrated.
