Holistic Counseling and Transforming Ones Life.

Holistic Counseling is about assisting another to transform his life. Transforming ones life is not about changing it. While life is much about doing differently, the genesis of the transformation is about a person altering or transforming his belief or thought of who he thinks he is.

We tend to believe that our life is determined or influenced by people, places, things, situations and circumstance and that who we are is the mere accumulation of our past experiences but this is not so. Rather, it is our thoughts and beliefs that determine our experiences and life and also that we are completely and solely responsible for their creation.

What we think and believe, especially about ourselves, determines our emotions and behavior in the world and it is our behavior that merely validates what we think and believe about ourselves. Furthermore, we believe or think that we know who we are in life but the reality is that we truly do not. Much of who we are really being we are simply not present to. Much of our life is spent in pretense and who we are really being is hidden from us.

The Primary Filter that Colors our Perceptions and Relationships

Some believe that they have the ability to see reality for what it is.  Some believe that they see others for who they are.  Some believe that they know and that they are right in their perceptions and ideas about how the world is, about others and even about ourselves.  They believe that they are open minded and willing to learn from the world and others, that they can experience the world objectively.

However, we sometimes lose sight of the important filters that we use to experience life.  These filters affect the information that we believe we gain from the world.  We see the world through several filters.  Some of the filters that we constantly use are our sensory organs that we have, that we use every day.  There are our eyes (visual), ears (sound) and skin (kinesthetic) that are biological filters through which we experience the world and others.

The primary filter that we have, little known or ever recognized, is the belief that we have about ourselves.  This belief to which I refer is that which in many ways defines us.  It is a belief about who we think we are.  It is our self limiting belief.  This fundamental core belief colors or influences everything in our life, our perceptions and beliefs about the world we live in and those who we know and interact with.  It is the source from which we project onto the world.  To transform our life requires that we become aware of our self limiting belief, otherwise there will be no true transformation, merely change.

Our true intention shows up in our actions.

Our true intention will show up in our actions.  What we do and how we behave will reveal our real intention, regardless of what we say or express verbally.  It is important in any change process, including the recovery program, to plan or say your intention.  Plan and express your intention each morning upon awakening and stay present to it throughout the day.  What are you committed to today?  What are you committed to now?  What is it that you want to create in your life?  What is it that you want to create now?

To fulfill on our intention will require a plan, both a recovery plan and a daily action plan, tools to bring about ones intention.  First is the recovery plan, a general direction in which you will go, the goals that you will attempt to accomplish.  Remember to develop your recovery plan.  Plan your work.  Your recovery plan is about your life and your integrity.  Once created, are you in integrity with your recovery plan?  Are you in integrity with your life?

Next is your daily action plan, how you will bring your recovery plan into reality and your day to day life.  Remember to create your daily action plan daily.  Always work this plan daily.  Your daily action plan is about your commitment and integrity with respect to your recovery plan.  Your daily action plan is about fulfilling on your intention and commitments.  Your daily action plan is about keeping your recovery plan in existence.

The constraint or barrier from the past limits us in life.

Many people believe that our past affects us, sometimes negatively and sometimes positively.  In mental health counseling and the recovery community the idea of your past is usually referred to in the negative sense.  Some believe that the past is the problem and it has to be worked through in order for you to transform your life.  However, some believe that your past does not exist, actually that it never existed.  All you have is the present, the moment, the Now.  This is all that you have ever had, from one moment to the next moment.  Our belief that we have a past is the first part of the problem and the second is that inside this belief about the past are events that need to be resolved.  The barrier or constraint to our life is exactly this, our beliefs about the existence of the past.  To the degree that we believe that a past exists and that it somehow has or is still affecting our life will create and generate negative experiences for us.  The constraints and barriers are ones we make up, that we generate from our mind and impose it on the world, on what we believe to be the world or reality.  Simply stated we cause the constraint or barrier that limits us in life.

Who Are We?

The question, “Who Are We?” or “Who Am I?” is one that man has been struggling with for many years. There have been many answers put forth by various thinkers throughout the ages as to who we really are. I believe that as long as we attempt to define ourselves as something separate, as this or that, that we will never know or experience who we really are. It is only be getting the unity of ourselves with the world, with reality, that we have the possibility of experiencing who we really are. From being separate, from perceiving and believing that we are separate from others and everything in the world, do we experience pain, life being a struggle, and the human conditions that seem to haunt humanity. It is by experiencing our unity that we find the answer to the above mentioned question. As Tolle wrote in A New Earth, “Underneath the surface appearane, everything is not only connected with everything else, but also with the Source of all life out of which it came. Even a stone, and more easily a flower or a bird, could show you the way back to God, to the Source, to yourself.”
