Stress is something that everyone experiences today, in one form or another.  The consequences of stress vary from one person to the next.  Stress has become one of the major issues that health care providers are now facing in growing numbers.  The consequences of stress can be psychological, physical, behavioral and vocational in nature.  A great deal of effort is now being put into finding ways to help people manage stress.

There are a variety of ways to deal with stress, to help reduce or even eliminate stress in our lives.  One of the most important things that people need to learn is how to relax.  This is very difficult for many people.  For some being able to relax almost seems impossible.  For these people their entire day is filled with stressful situations that must be handled or dealt with, at least this is what they truly believe.

As a result of our poor self esteem, life will seem as though it is a real struggle.  Life will be mostly about survival.  As we play into our self fulfilling prophecy our self image will tend to make our experiences match what it is that we truly think of ourselves.  A poor self image will beget a negative life and with the negative way of being will come the experience of stress and its sometimes devastating consequences.

Relaxation Music will work if you use it daily!

Over the past few weeks I have been listening to Gentle Dreams mixed with the sounds of the Ocean.  What I am finding is that my body, and eventually my mind, starts to relax, almost immediately.  There is a great deal of soothing power in water, and in particular in the ocean.  The ocean simply mesmerizes me as I am listening to it.  In addition, the relaxation music of Gentle Dreams effectively lulls me into a very deep state of relaxation.  While I listen to this recording in the evening, around when I am going to bed, I have been finding myself drifting off to sleep more effectively and gently.  There is a moment while I am listening to the music and ocean that I know I am moving quickly and effortlessly towards a sleep state.  It is at the moment I turn the music and ocean off on my CD player and then drift gently to sleep.  I am also finding that when I listen to this mix of music and nature that I am finding myself more calm during the day as well.  This recording can be used throughout the day, as a break from the stress that we tend to experience.

Another Way to Use the Power of Relaxation Music

I have started to use my relaxation music in the evenings, before I go to sleep.  Being tired from the day’s activities, I lay in bed to watch something on the TV.  In the past this has helped to relax me a bit.  However, instead of listening to the audio portion of the TV presentation, I now wear earphones and listen to only the relaxation music. With the audio of the TV turned off, I listen to the relaxation music that I created.  Currently I am listening to Gentle Dreams mixed with the sounds of the Ocean.  The mixture of the music and the power sounds of the ocean, I begin to gently relax.

Instead of listening to and concentrating on the audio portion of the TV, I let the Relaxation Music begin to relax me completely. What the audio portion ofI am now sharing is that I listen solely to the power of the relaxation music.  At some point, and usually only after a few minutes, I feel mysel the TV would most likely do is engage my thinking, possibly keeping me awake longer.  What happens with the particular approach that f becoming more and more relaxed, sleepy, and then I turn the TV off and continue to listen to the relaxation music.  As I continue to listen to the relaxation music I quickly start to drift off to sleep.

The Roller Coaster Ride of Daily Life.

Every day that I wake up is about getting back on the roller coaster ride of life.  I wake up with possibility and inspiration, begin my work on my new projects and take on life.  While the ride is fun and exciting in the beginning of the day, at some point the ride starts to take a dip. The dip is thinking and feeling that what I am doing will not work or succeed, that I will fail.  The experience of the dip is always of a negative nature.  Fear sets in and I start to question my work, that I will make it in my new endeavor.  This happens everyday.  I have come to know that it will happen each day, at some point in my day.

I am now working on staying present to my feelings.  My feelings are a cue that the dip is taking place and that I am making up a negative story about myself, my life and what I am now doing.  Once I feel the negative feelings I am practicing relaxing and focusing on the present, bringing myself into the now.  I relax and ground myself.  Grounding myself helps to get that nothing is wrong now.  The feeling and thinking about being wrong is from my past attempting to direct and structure my present.  It is my old story about myself that starts to come up, attempting to take back control of my life.

The work is to practice staying aware of my body, how it is feeling, relax when I start to experience negative emotions and ground myself in the present.

A Comment on Facing the Emotion of Fear and Pushing through it.

Sometimes we get caught up in the emotion of fear.  Sometimes experiencing fear on a daily basis will stop us from becoming our possibility, of moving forward in life.  The only solution is to face the emotion of fear.  We must face it directly.  We must surrender to the emotion of fear and move into it, not try to avoid it, if we are to move through and past it.  Sometimes we try to make it go away by using drugs or alcohol.  However, it is only in facing it directly that you start to give it up or let go of the ability of fear to control us, of it directing and ruling my life.  Face it and give up trying to make it go away.  Trying to make it go away is not facing it but avoiding the work.

The fear has been created by our thoughts and beliefs, our thoughts and beliefs about ourselves.  The fear and the thinking process that created it are from our past.  It is only in facing the fear and affirming ourselves a new that we start to transform our life.  We must relax the body, face the fear, and any consequences that we have created as a result of living in it, and start to create our life from the present, by constantly declaring ourselves as different, different from who we think we are from our past.  Facing fear directly gives us the opportunity to give up the fear of our experience of fear.  While not always an easy process it is necessary for one to live differently.

Creating a State of Relaxation during the Day

The latest part of my practice of transformation is to notice when I am tense, on edge even.  What this requires of me is to notice how I am feeling at the moment.  I simply practice directing my awareness to my body, asking myself how I am feeling at the moment.  What I am finding more times than not is that I am tense.  Most of the time I find that my body is experiencing a state of being stressed.

Once noticed I simply practice relaxing my body.  It is a letting go of the tenseness.  Given this work I know that when I am tense that I am in a state of fear, on guard, preparing for something negative to happen.  To respond differently I simply relax my body and the tenseness eventually dissipates.  I feel more at ease, more relaxed.

This part of my practice takes a lot of awareness.  Even when I do the exercise I know that my body will tense up again, sometimes very soon.  This type of work takes a lot of discipline.  Creating the awareness of a new habit requires that I connect back to my body and how it is feeling at any given time.  Even though I know that my body will become tense again I am getting releif from this practice.  I must stay dedicated to monitoring my body and how it is feeling.

Staying Present to My Feelings is a Start to My Transformation

Given that my life has been about living in a lot of fear, driven by fear, stopped by fear, I am now working on noticing, staying present to my feelings.  When I am aware of me being fearful, tense, I go to relaxing my body and breathing slowly and deeply. This is a practice that I am in the process of making a habit for myself, for helping me to move from the fear based state to one of relaxation.  It is work because from time to time I find myself caught up in fear and then have to consciously tell myself to relax.

I am also listening more to my music, my relaxation music.  I am listening to the music not as a musician but as one practicing relaxation.  I am now listening to my own products, listening to be more relaxed and at peace within myself.  I know that if I listen to the relaxation music repeatedly for awhile that I can use the music to relax myself when I need it, when I am in that state of fear.  I can not be in fear and relaxed at the same time.  I am now training myself to make a conscious choice to be relaxed and give up the fear.

The next part of this process is to start to work on changing my fundamental internal language, what I say and how I talk to myself.  I plan to focus on the use of positive affirmations to help me create a more healthy and happy state of existence.

A Simple Meditative Technique that will Ground You.

Meditation does not have to be difficult or complicated.  It can be simple and effective too.  Many times the people who teach meditation to help with reducing stress teach techniques that are difficult to learn and take time to learn.  Sometimes the teaching requires the teacher to help the person learn over an extended period of time.  While there is nothing wrong with this type of approach, meditation does not have to be complicated.  It can be simple and effective.  The following technique is simple and very effective.

1.  Find a chair where you can be comfortable.

2.  To the best of your ability make sure that you will not be interrupted.

3.  As you sit in the chair merely allow your body to begin to relax.  As you feel comfortable, let your eyes close slowly and naturally.  As your eyes close let your body relax even more.

4.  As you are beginning to slowly relax your body, let your awareness and attention to your butt.  Feel  your butt sitting in the chair, feel your butt against the seat of the chair.  And stay with this feeling for a moment.

5.  Now feel your back, feel your back resting against the back of the chair.  And stay with this feeling for a moment.

6.  Feel your arms, perhaps as they are resting in your lap or on the arms of the chair.  And stay with this feeling for a moment.

7.  Now feel your feet, feel your feet resting against the floor, feel the soles of your feel touching the floor.  And stay with this feeling.

8.  Now feel your entire body resting in the chair, feel your butt, your back, your arms and your feet, feel your entire body relaxing in the chair.  And stay with this feeling for a moment.

9.  As you are feeling your entire body relaxing in the chair, just let yourself move deeper into relaxation.  Move your awareness to your entire body as you move even deeper into relaxation.

10.  When you feel ready, allow yourself to come back, to come back to the present.  Open your eyes and go about your day.
